Playing around with inversions of the GOLDEN GRAY artwork. Might end up doing a larger work like this, not sure what I’d do with it. A poster maybe? I can’t thank Amy enough for letting us use the original image. It’s given me art for the whole campaign. In other news, fall is in the air. Hellooooo, jacket weather.

Since I bought my “standing desk” about one month ago, I now don’t even realize I’m standing all day while I work. I designed my environment around me to encourage a certain kind of behavior I’ve deemed healthy.

And now I don’t even know I’m being healthy. I’m just working.

That’s how behavior change happens. Design your life to fit the behavior you want to encourage.

Spent yesterday listening to the masters of Golden Gray. They sound fantastic, Daniel Whitt did a bang up job. No release date yet as we are making videos, planning shows and all that. Above is the album artwork. The photo was taken by friend and photographer, Amy Sarisky. Here are links to her flickr and her blog. The art was designed by yours truly. The image on the right is not too different from the original and the image on the left side is an inversion. They will be the front and back. Which is which, you decide. The left side looks like a bird’s eye view of clouds over the sun, or looking down on a scorched Earth. (Yikes) No type, with exception of the spine which will read Duchess Leo / Golden Gray / WHR006.

Albums are full of tough decisions. How many songs? How should we put it out? Which leather pants should we wear for the cover shoot? We’re almost done with ours, but there’s still just a few of these important decisions to make.

I can tell you that we’re calling it Golden Gray and we’re very happy with it. A funny thing happened in the making where the songs started becoming things we never intended, so we had to adapt to them. Usually it’s the other way around I think? We’re planning for the next one already and how we’ll be applying everything we learned.

Anyway, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Our record will be out in the fall. And there will indeed be shows and parties coinciding. Dear friends, we’ll see you there!

I love Malcolm Gladwell. He can start a talk on the subject of spaghetti sauce and finish it with a map of the mind. Read his book Outliers to associate yourself with the 10,000 hour rule. It will change the way you think about how you spend your time. In this talk he describes a movement in the 20th century from the search for universal truths to the understanding of variability. It was a point when every major industry stopped looking for just one way to meet the needs of every customer, and started giving us choices. Malcolm’s final message here is that in embracing the diversity of human beings, we will find a better way to true happiness. An argument could be made that adding options, while good for consumers and the economy, has made us a people distracted by a continuing cycle of inconsequential choices. Or maybe I’m doomy today. One thing is for sure, read Malcolm. He will provide a different lens for you to view the world.
